Roanoke's poverty rate is higher than the state or national average. Statistics from the Children's Defense Fund tell us that within the next 30 minutes in the United States:
Through no fault of their own, hundreds of Roanoke area children face similarly grim futures. Yet, a simple, decent home can turn these predictions into positive ones and produce pride and peace in the lives of children. The move to stable housing allows our families to concentrate on other areas of their lives--money management, children's education, community involvement, improved health care--that could not be addressed in their former, often chaotic situations. Habitat's faith in families provides the chance to overcome the consequences of a life of despair by making an investment in their future. Children become proud of their parent's achievements and set their own goals higher. Your part in Habitat's housing ministry will help break the poverty cycle. There are many ways to become involved with HFHRV's fight to eradicate poverty housing in the Roanoke Valley. Some people like to be involved as board or committee members, others prefer hands-on construction work. While yet others prefer to make a donation to our organization or sponsor all or part of a home. No matter what your skills are or how you want to help, Habitat would welcome your involvement as a member of our team.
