Volunteer of the Month-Bob Collins

Pay attention in church—it may change your life in ways you'd never expect!

At least that's what happened to Bob Collins that Sunday in 1995 when the Habitat director came to Southview United Methodist to make a special appeal for volunteers. Bob answered the call, and he's been a regular, valuable volunteer ever since!

As a member of Habitat's Builders Club, Bob is a regular Wednesday and Saturday worker, enjoying nearly every phase of construction as long as it's on the ground. "I'm no roofer," he laughs. Recently he has raised walls and installed wallboard on Habitat's Fairview Road site. "He's great," says Volunteer Coordinator Matt Sasso. "He's a real team player, and will help in any way he's needed."

Retired from his job since '88, Bob's never idle. "I get up every morning with nothing to do, and go to bed with only half of it done!" the former air traffic controller says with a chuckle.

When he's not hammering for Habitat, he constructs frames and mats pictures; enjoys his grandchildren, 6 and 8; and gardens. His joy in working outside is evident as he confides, "Last summer I didn't have any beans, but my tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers were beautiful!" A former chairman of his church's Trustees, Bob has taught Sunday School and sings in the choir. He's active in the VFW, and, with his wife Sandra--herself a Habitat volunteer—has cared for 37 foster children.

Bob understands and admires Habitat's mission, and particularly likes attending the dedications of completed houses. "It's heartwarming to see those house keys handed over to people who have struggled to make their life better," he remarks.

Bob's good humor and down-to-earth demeanor make him a well-liked and valuable member of the Builders Club. He invites anyone with a little time to give, and an interest in learning new things and helping others, to join him in his mission!
